About the Reading Program....

Seabreeze offers comprehensive and supplemental intervention reading programs. In addition, the school encourages literacy through our Reading Rally, access to the media center, and goals to provide print-rich environments in each classroom.

The literacy team consists of the following members:

  •           Robert Wallace (Principal)

  •           Kathy Gibbons (Asst. Principal)

  •           Ruthie Labno (Asst. Principal)

  •           Tikija Picott   (Reading Coach)

  •           Jacquie Tripp (Guidance Counselor)

  •           Lynda Bonnick (English)

  •           Kelly Grillo    (ESE consult)

  •           Lynne Seeber          (Intensive Reading)

  •           Chris Weinrich (Social Studies)

I provide staff development through demonstration of lessons for reading and content area teachers, best practices workshops, and assessment training. I also give assistance in reviewing progress monitoring data, monitor how materials and resources are being used and provide support for the overall literacy program.

I give assessment training, assist with progress monitoring, and review the data from those assessments.  My role is to provide staff development through lessons and workshops. One major challenge involves the desire to impact reading in teacher’s classrooms.

there are ten other members of the reading team. They are responsible for the students who are deficient in reading skills. These teachers diagnose, progress monitor, and give explicit instruction for students identified for the reading program.

In our Comprehensive Intervention Reading Programs READ 180 is used. These programs adjust the instruction to meet the needs of level 1 and 2 students. In the Supplemental Intervention Reading Program, students are provided with differentiated instruction to meet the learning needs in specific areas. The following is a list of materials used in the program:

  •           Words Their Way

  •           Word Study for Phonics

  •           Rewards

  •           Rewards Plus

  •           SRA

  •           Six Minute Solutions

  •           Be a Better Reader

The programs also use the following technology:

  •           FCAT Explorer

  •           Lexia

  •           Achieve 3000

Materials are user friendly and engaging for the learner.  In the classroom, the student is given explicit and differentiated instruction and has access to a print-rich environment. Seabreeze’s Media Center offers students and teachers a print-rich environment. The staff is very knowledgeable and supports literacy in our school.

FCAT Explorer: Free FCAT Practice On The Internet
It's a fact: to graduate high school, all 10th graders must pass the FCAT. Fortunately, there's the FCAT Explorer.

The FCAT Explorer is a free, online practice program from the Florida Department of Education. It features two practice programs created especially for 10th graders: Reading Timeline and Math Timeline.

Both programs offer practice for the skills tested on the FCAT and feature lots of stuff to help you get the most out of your study time. Reading Timeline is packed with 23 reading passages and over 200 practice questions to help you do your best on the FCAT. It also includes eight lessons that focus on reading skills identified as being the most challenging for 10th grade students. Math Timeline contains over 140 math questions and features an online calculator and a handy formula reference sheet.

Best of all, the FCAT Explorer is online, which means you can use the FCAT Explorer on any computer connected to the Internet: at school, at the library, even at home.

Whether you're retaking the FCAT or taking it for the first time, your performance on the test will benefit from the extra time you spend studying math and reading on the FCAT Explorer.
