Program of Studies Complete 2011-2012

SHS Dual Enrollment Guide (printable version)

1st Do you have the GPA?  You must have a 3.0 cumulative un-weighted GPA (every H.S. course taken)

2nd Do you have test scores?  You must have minimum 440 verbal and 440 math SAT + 500 math for college algebra, 17 English 18 Reading 19 math ACT + 21 math for college algebra, or qualifying DSC test score from the DSC testing center.  * If you have 44V and 44M PSAT score try the SAT  at  www.collegeboard.com

3rd Do you have transportation?  Volusia county school district does not provide transportation.  Any classes you choose may not interfere with your SHS courses (this includes early release days.)  DSC and SHS courses may not overlap, plan on ½ hour to drive from SHS to DSC, find parking, and walk to your classroom safely.

STOPif you are missing one of the following three things Dual Enrollment is not right for you.

Do you have a college major, career, or 4yr college in mind?  If so research those options to help you determine which dual enrollment courses might be most beneficial to you.  Especially prerequisite classes for the major in college you plan to attend.  This may save you additional time needed to proceed into your 4yr college major.

You may not choose 100% on-line based courses.  You may only choose courses of 3 credits or more.  You can take up to a maximum 5 DSC courses and minimum of 1 Volusia County School course. You may not exceed a total of 8 combined courses through DSC and VCS.  DSC and VCS do not share the same academic calendar, please plan accordingly.  This means you must attend DSC even if VCS has a student holiday.  If a student earns a grade of “D” or “F” in a dual enrolment course, he/she may repeat the course one time; and take no more than 2 dual enrollment courses the following term, one of which was the “D” or “F” course.  You may only take a maximum of 60 Dual enrollment credits, be careful you may finish these before you graduate and have to return to SHS full time.  You must bring a copy of your DSC schedule back to SHS after registering.

Program Guides (including AA course requirements), Course Descriptions, Course Availability, and Academic Calendar are all available under the “future students” tab at the top of www.daytonastate.edu website, and then click “academic resources” on the left hand side of that web page.  Registration will open in April!

Dual Enrollment is Free, You get to pick your schedule each semester, DSC has Honors college and Quanta programs for highly advanced students, an AA degree guarantees you admission to the SUS under the 2+2 program.  DSC classes are weighted a full point.  Graduate from High School Early with an AA degree.

Dual enrollment is authorized under Florida Statute 1007.271 as an articulated acceleration mechanism.  Dual enrollment requires a reciprocal agreement between a college and a school district for high school students to attend college classes to receive credit both at the high school level and at the college level; this will affect your H. S. GPA as well as your college GPA.  While not for every student, the dual enrollment program is designed to meet the needs of the academically motivated, socially mature high school student.  All college credits earned through the dual enrollment program prior to graduation from high school will be recorded on the student’s permanent academic record (transcript) and as official college credits.  Students and parent should be aware that dual enrollment credits/grades are permanent and may affect the student’s financial aid status and housing status upon entering college, in addition to colleges may not accept dual enrollment credit (especially out of the state of FL).  Please check with the college you plan to attend.  Although an A.A. degree guarantees admission to the state’s upper division public institutions, it does not guarantee acceptance to a university and you will still go through the admissions process.
