The Seabreeze Honor Society chapter establishes rules for membership that are based upon a student's outstanding performance in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. These criteria for selection form the foundation upon which the organization and its activities are built. ByLaws are updated/changed yearly before induction. Any changes will affect new inductees and may affect current members.
Scholarship
10th and 11th grade students who have a cumulative weighted grade point average of 3.6 after the first semester of the grading year meet the scholarship requirement for membership. Each grading period cumulative Grade Point Averages (GPA) are reviewed. Students with a cumulative weighted GPA of 3.6 or above are then eligible for consideration based on scholarship. Those with 3.5 or above are eligible for continued membership.
Service
This quality is defined through the voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit. Second or third year members that have completed and submitted all required community service hours from the previous annual membership meet the requirement for service. Any second or third members that did not complete or submit their service hours are not eligible for the consecutive year. Prior to dismissal, a letter of deficiency will be sent to each member outlining requirements and deadlines.
Leadership
Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, promoters of school activities, idea-contributors, dependable, and persons who exemplify positive attitudes about life. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others. Students pursuing membership are encouraged to join organizations, teams, and other groups that recognize leadership.
Character
The student of good character upholds principles of morality and ethics, is cooperative, demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability, shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others, and generally maintains a good and clean lifestyle*.
- Students that meet all of the criteria above will receive an invitation to apply.
- Dues must be kept current yearly ($10.00).
- New members must be inducted into the NHS. Official annual membership will be recognized after the induction ceremony.
- Members must continue to demonstrate outstanding scholarship, character, leadership, and service throughout the year. Every nine-week grading period will produce a review of GPA and discipline with semester/yearly reviews of service/tutoring requirements. Students deficient will receive letters of probation**.
- Members must acquire a 3.6 cumulative weighted GPA for potential induction and maintain a cumulative 3.5 GPA to stay in active status.
- Members are expected to attend club meetings.
- Members are required to follow all school rules and exhibit leadership, good moral character, and ethical behavior.
- Juniors are required to have accumulate a minimum of 10 service hours which includes 4 tutoring hours
by the end of the school year. Senior members are required to have accumulate a minimum of
30 service hours which includes 8 tutoring hours.
More information may be found at the Official NHS Website.
*To be considered under character, a student's current year discipline record will be reviewed by a faculty council before induction. This council, consisting of five teacher members, will decide if a referral on record warrants dismissal and/or approval of membership. Referrals are individually examined based on the student and the benchmarks of NHS.
**Failure to maintain any of the above requirements will result in one grading period of probationary status, and a subsequent review of membership before an individual's membership is rescinded. Discipline referrals, upon the decision of the principal and/or faculty council, may result in immediate dismissal without probationary warning. Members who resign or are dismissed are not eligible to re-apply for membership.
